How to export Anki decks and try them in Memoriser

Export an Anki .apkg deck with media and optional scheduling, import it on the web, and check cards, media and history before switching.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Export one deck as an .apkg package, include its media, and decide whether you want scheduling. Keep the original, then inspect the import report and a sample of cards in Memoriser.

1. Export the deck from Anki

Use the desktop application for these steps. Start with a representative deck rather than your whole collection.

  1. Open File → Export in Anki.
  2. Choose Anki Deck Package (.apkg) and select the deck you want.
  3. Include media. Include scheduling information if you want to carry your study progress.
  4. Save the package and keep an unchanged copy.

2. Import on the Memoriser website

Sign in and open the Anki import page. Select your package and choose whether to keep your Anki scheduling. Keep the page open while files transfer; follow the progress message for when processing can continue in the background.

If the transfer is interrupted, the importer lets you select the same file to resume. Read any needs-attention message before retrying, particularly if storage or media access is involved.

3. Check the result before studying at scale

Inspect the import summary for missing media and skipped cards. Open examples of basic cards, cloze deletions and image-based cards if the deck contains them. Check both sides and play any audio you rely on.

Anki notes and rendered cards are not necessarily one-to-one. A cloze note can produce multiple cards. Compare usable prompts and the report rather than assuming two different counts indicate data loss.

Understand the scheduling boundary

When you keep scheduling, Memoriser converts it to its scheduler. Imported Anki review events are preserved separately from Memoriser reviews. Anki preset weights and retention settings do not become your Memoriser settings.

Future intervals can differ. Keep your source collection until you are satisfied with card rendering, review timing and media. Custom scripts and add-on behaviours need a practical check; a package transfer is not an add-on installation.

Common questions

Should I export plain text or .apkg?

Use .apkg for this workflow. A deck package can include card structure, media and scheduling; plain text serves a different purpose.

Why are images missing?

Check that media was included in the export and inspect the importer’s warnings. Verify that the original cards have working media before exporting again.
